Hardware and Software Requirements for NetProxy 4

The following requirements are for the PC that runs NetProxy. NetProxy imposes no restrictions on the other computers on your network that connect out to the Internet.

NetProxy runs under any of the following operating systems:-

  • Windows XP
  • Windows Me
  • Windows 2000
  • Windows NT 4 Server (service pack 6a or above)
  • Windows NT 4 Workstation (service pack 6a or above)
  • Windows 98
  • Windows 95
  • Windows Terminal Server

The minimum requirements for a PC running NetProxy are:-

  • 133MHz Pentium PC, with at least 32MB of RAM running Windows 95.
  • An existing Internet connection (such as a dialup modem, ISDN, cable-modem or leased-line connection).

On a low-spec PC, adding more RAM typically improves performance (more so than running it on a machine with a faster processor), especially if the PC is used for other tasks as any performance problems on a low-spec PC are usually caused by Windows swapping parts of RAM to and from disk.

We strongly recommend that any machine running NetProxy has all of the relevant "Service Packs" and "Critical Updates" for the Operating System installed. Microsoft's Windows Update web site provides a means for Windows users to obtain critical updates over the Internet.

Note that, although NetProxy itself must be installed on a PC running Windows, the other computers on your network that access the Internet via NetProxy can run any operating systems that support the TCP/IP protocols. This includes 16-bit versions of Windows such as Windows for Workgroups 3.11 (with the free Microsoft TCP/IP protocol stack), Windows 95/98/Me, Windows NT/2000, OS/2, MacOS, UNIX (of course!), and most other widely used operating systems.
